There is a possibility that you will require medication if environmental changes are not enough for you to be successful at school or work. They are either short or long acting, and include the family of methylphenidates (such as Ritalin) and amphetamine salts.
In the UK stimulants are the most common ADHD medications prescribed. If you don't have any other condition that requires a different medication, stimulants are typically prescribed first.
Stimulants
Stimulants improve the activity of brain regions that control attention and behavior. They help improve concentration, to concentrate the mind and reduce the tendency to be impulsive. They are also referred to as amphetamines or psychostimulants and are legal to take with the prescription of ADHD medicines. However, they are commonly abused recreationally as illegal drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine to increase energy levels and feelings of well-being.
You might be familiar with the brand name Ritalin that is the most frequently used stimulant to treat ADHD. It boosts the activity of the brain areas that control attention and behavior, which helps improves concentration and reduces the impulsive and hyperactive behavior. It can be taken in the form of immediate-release tablets taken every 2 or 3 times per day or modified-release capsules which release the medication throughout the day.
Lisdexamfetamine is a different medication that stimulates certain parts of the brain to increase concentration, help focus the mind and decrease impulsive behaviour. If methylphenidate isn't working it is usually prescribed to adults, teens and children who are older than five years old. Lisdexamfetamine tablets are usually taken in three or two doses a day. Atomoxetine works differently to the other medications listed above and is offered to teenagers, adults and children (aged 5and over) who are not able to take the methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine due to negative side effects or for other reasons. It is a selective Noradrenaline-Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). It increases the amount of noradrenaline which transmits messages between brain cells and improves concentration and impulse control. It is consumed as a tablet or oral solution every day.
Many randomized controlled studies as also observational studies have been conducted to examine the advantages and risks that are associated with treatment for adult adhd. These studies compared the different medicines to placebos or other medications, but not all included head-tohead trials. This study combines results from those trials by using a method called network meta-analysis. This is the largest analysis of ADHD to date and strengthens NICE's guidelines regarding prescribing medication for adults with ADHD.
The results show that a large percentage of people with ADHD can benefit from medication. However, it is essential to weigh the benefits and risks of taking it. Patients should discuss this with a doctor and, if needed decide to treat the symptoms of the condition with other treatments, like therapy and lifestyle adjustments. It is also essential to identify any medical conditions that could cause or exacerbate symptoms of ADHD, such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy, thyroid disorders, depression, and lead poisoning. To determine the possible causes of symptoms, a thorough history and examination is necessary. Patients who have a history excessive alcohol or drug use should be treated with extreme caution. A referral to a specialist could be required. Patients who have an extensive history of developmental or mental disorders should be assessed more carefully and referred specialists for any tests and assessments. This can include a more thorough history of the family members of the patient, since genetic factors are known to play a role in ADHD.
